The Hanger

Launch Bay is steeped in history from the yesteryears when Hobsonville Point was an air force base. The beautiful heritage buildings of Launch Bay enrich the prestigious neighbourhood, including the Married Officer Homes along the waterfront restored and externally renovated by Winton. Winton's next big restoration project is the Catalina Hangar that stored aircraft during WWII located along Launch Road.

Our history, with a modern twist

Once known as No.2 Hangar, the Catalina Hangar was built in 1934 with some unique architectural forms, including its cantilevered design doors and roof form. The building is notable for its art deco influences with the pillars at either side of the hangar doors. The architecture of the Marlborough Apartments, which sit alongside the Catalina Hangar and the entrance piece to Launch Bay, reflects its neighbour's masonry and industrial sheet metal facades. Albeit unintentional, the rounded tower corner of the Marlborough is a visual connection with the art deco influence of the hangar.

A community project

The vision for Launch Bay was to embrace the rich history of the site by celebrating it in this premium neighborhood's architectural design. For the Catalina Hangar, Winton wanted to preserve its landmark status and retain as much of the structure as possible in its original form. Winton is working closely with a range of specialists to enable functionality and retain its much-valued historic charm.

In the first quarter of 2022, Winton will begin carefully renovating the hangar to bring life back into the aged beauty and give it purpose. Once complete, The Catalina Hangar will be home to a character restaurant facing Launch Road, a classic car showroom, workshop valet, as well as 70+ car garages – all of which are well needed in one of Auckland’s fastest-growing suburbs, Hobsonville Point.
