The Didsbury Art Trail at Hobsonville Point

10/03/20

The Didsbury Art Trail, named after long time HLC Director Richard Didsbury, officially opened in the weekend for all to enjoy Auckland’s newest destination for art lovers.

The mostly flat 5km loop includes stunning, larger-than-life artworks from some of New Zealand’s top artists. As well as the 5km loop, the coastal extension takes walkers along the water to Chichester Cottage towards Hobsonville Point Park. The walk is pram, cycle, and scooter-friendly for little ones.

Visitors can take the ferry from Auckland CBD directly to Hobsonville Point to walk the Didsbury Art Trail. Right there on the ferry wharf, you will find the stainless steel Hinaki / Guardian sculpture by Virginia King. From the wharf, you can go in either direction to continue the trail, maybe stopping off at Catalina Bay for lunch and refreshments.

It is great how the trail encourages connection between different parts of Hobsonville Point. It links several parks and shared spaces, including Harrier Point playground on Launch Road featuring a giant bucket swing and flying fox overlooking the water, and the award-winning Hobsonville Point playground on Buckley Avenue. The ‘BYO headphones’ enables the functionality for trail walkers to hear from the artists themselves and experience the trail in a whole new way.

The Didsbury Art Trail goes along the front of Launch Bay, which is only a few minutes’ walk from the wharf. Why not make a stop at Launch Bay and visit the Oval House show suite, or check out the view from Launch Bay’s newest addition, the Ovation Apartments - open every Saturday and Sunday between 11am – 2pm.
